This quick & easy weeknight recipe for homemade sloppy joes uses simple ingredients and tastes better than the store bought sauce! It's a naturally gluten free and dairy free meal that's family friendly.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot add in the diced onions and bell peppers. Cook until softened and translucent, about 7-10 minutes.
2 Tablespoons (25 g) Olive Oil, ½ Cup (75 g) Yellow Onion, ½ Cup (70 g) Green Bell Pepper
Add ground beef to the pan with the vegetables. Season with salt, black pepper and red pepper flakes, if using. Also add in the minced garlic. Cook until the ground beef is browned, breaking it into small pieces.
Drain the fat from the meat and return the pan to the stove.
Add the remaining ingredients: ketchup, water, brown sugar and mustard. Stir well.
1 Cup (270 g) Ketchup, ¼ Cup (57 g) Water, 2 Tablespoons (25 g) Brown Sugar, 1 ½ teaspoons Yellow Mustard
Allow the mixture to simmer until the sauce is thickened. Season to taste.
Serve on gluten free hamburger buns or open faced on garlic bread texas toast.
