    Pin for coconut lime margarita.

This coconut lime margarita is creamy, cool and refreshing. With a little bit of sweetness from the cream of coconut and a hint of lime, this margarita is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.

As the well-known Harry Nilsson song goes, "You put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em bot' up". 😉

    Recipe Notes & Tips

    • Shake the cream of coconut well before measuring to keep the margarita smooth and evenly sweet.
    • Use finely shredded coconut for the rim so it sticks easily and doesn't overpower each sip.
    • Adjust sweetness to taste: Start with ½ oz agave and add more if you prefer a sweeter margarita.
    • Fresh lime juice matters here. It balances the richness of the coconut.
    • Best served on the rocks: This margarita is meant to be shaken, not blended, for the creamiest texture.
    • Make ahead tip: Mix everything except ice and shake again just before serving for the best consistency.

What's the difference between cream of coconut and coconut milk?

Cream of coconut is sweetened and much thicker than coconut milk. It's essential for this coconut lime margarita and cannot be swapped with coconut milk without changing the flavor and texture.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I make a coconut lime margarita ahead of time?

Yes. You can mix the tequila, lime juice, cream of coconut, and agave up to 24 hours in advance and store it covered in the refrigerator. Shake with ice just before serving to restore the creamy texture.

How do I get the shredded coconut to stick to the rim?

Running a fresh lime wedge around the rim provides enough moisture for finely shredded coconut to adhere evenly without needing sugar or syrup.

Can I make this margarita less sweet?

Absolutely. Reduce the agave nectar or add an extra ½ oz of lime juice to balance the sweetness from the cream of coconut.

Can I turn this into a pitcher margarita for a crowd?

Yes. Multiply the ingredients by the number of servings, stir well, and refrigerate. Shake individual servings with ice for the best texture before pouring.
