When are cherries in season?
In North Carolina, cherries are in season from May until July, although you will mostly find local fresh cherries in the month of June.
In the US, the majority of cherries are grown in Michigan, Oregon and Washington. The seasonality for those areas is a little later, typically from June until August. Thanks to the sourcing in grocery stores, you can usually find fresh cherries for 4-5 months of the year.
If you decide to bake a cherry pie in the middle of winter, don't fret. Frozen cherries and canned cherries are available year round. Both are packed at the peak of freshness, so you can get a great flavor from these products!
Can I freeze fresh cherries?
Freezing cherries is a great way to preserve them. Remove the stems and pits right before freezing. Spread the fresh cherries on a baking sheet and place them in the freezer for about an hour to flash freeze. Once they are frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag or container taking care to remove as much air as possible from the container. Store until you're ready to use.
