Cajun food is filled with the flavors of herbs and spices, that almost always come from a store bought seasoning mix. It can be tricky to determine if a particular brand is gluten free, so for ease I've developed my own gluten free Cajun seasoning.

This spice blend will work with any recipe that calls for Cajun seasoning and it's made entirely from things you probably already have in your spice cabinet. It's also easily customizable if you need a low sodium Cajun seasoning or want it more or less spicy.

This homemade Cajun seasoning is just perfect to keep in your pantry. It is great to use in my Cajun fried rice recipe or this delicious Cajun-style chicken and sausage jambalaya.

    Ingredient Notes

TIP: Both McCormick and Badia brand spices are gluten free.

Cajun seasoning is just made of a combination of spices. As long as you use gluten free spices, then your mix will be gluten free.

    • Salt
    • Black Pepper
    • Cayenne Pepper
    • Garlic Powder
    • Onion Powder
    • Paprika
    • White Pepper
    • Cumin

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • Mild - If you like your food less spicy, reduce the amount of cayenne pepper in the recipe.
    • Low Sodium - This recipe is already lower in sodium than the store brands, but if you are following a low sodium diet feel free to further reduce that, omit the salt, or use a salt replacement.
    • Low Fodmap - You can omit the onion powder and garlic powder in the seasoning.

How to Make Gluten Free Cajun Seasoning

Once you've measured everything out, simply mix it together and transfer it to an airtight container for storage. To make things easier, I usually add my spices directly to my storage jar and then just close and shake it to combine.

How to Cook with Homemade Cajun Seasoning

This recipe is a direct replacement for store bought Cajun seasoning, so you can use it in any recipe that calls for that ingredient.

Some suggestions are using it to season meat before sauteing or grilling, adding it to rice dishes for an extra punch of flavor, and of course using it in any Cajun style recipe.

    Storage

Store the mixed Cajun seasoning in an airtight container in a cabinet or drawer away from heat or direct sunlight, as you would any other spices.
