Ingredient Notes
With just seven simple ingredients, these creamy mashed potatoes are so easy to make - even a beginner can do it!
- Potatoes - I prefer to use Yukon Gold potatoes in my mashed potatoes because they add a little bit of a buttery flavor, plus the beautiful golden color. You can make the potatoes with or without the skins, depending on your preference. Russet potatoes would be a suitable alternative to yukon golds.
- Vegan Butter - When it comes to mashed potatoes, butter is definitely added to taste. I start with ¼ cup but feel free to use as much as you like! I use Country Crock plant butter in most of my recipes. Any vegan butter will work fine. If you're not vegan or dairy free, use unsalted butter in the same measure.
- Non-Dairy Butter - Unsweetened coconut milk is my favorite milk substitute for cooking. It's creamy and adds no coconut flavor. If you're not dairy free, use whole milk in the same measure.
- Vegan Parmesan - I used freshly shredded vegan Parmesan here. Violife brand is my favorite. If you don't like Parmesan in your mashed potatoes, you can leave it out without any other modifications to the recipe.
- Garlic Powder, Salt & Black Pepper - All to perfectly season these potatoes. As with the butter, feel free to adjust the seasoning to your taste.
See recipe card for full ingredient list and quantities.
Substitutions & Variations
- Not Vegan or Dairy Free - use dairy butter, whole milk, and regular Parmesan cheese in place of the vegan substitutes. The measurements are the same.
- Mayo Mashed Potatoes - As much as I hate mayonnaise, my mom always added it to her mashed potatoes and they were so smooth and creamy. If you want to give it a try, add about ⅓ cup.
- Loaded Mashed Potatoes - Try adding in a little sour cream, some cooked bacon and chives for an amazing twist on loaded baked potatoes.
How to make Gluten Free Mashed Potatoes
I use a potato masher to make these potatoes. If you don't have one, a hand mixer will also do the trick!
STEP 1: Add the potatoes and 1 teaspoon of salt to a large pot. Add enough water to cover the potatoes by one inch. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and cover the potatoes. Simmer until fork tender, about 20 minutes.
STEP 2: Once cooked, drain all but ¼ cup of water from the potatoes. Mash the cooked potatoes with a potato masher until they reach your desired consistency.
STEP 3: Add the dairy-free butter, warmed dairy-free milk, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, salt and pepper to the potatoes. Stir well. Adjust seasonings to taste.
Are all mashed potatoes gluten free?
Some people make mashed potatoes from dried, boxed potato flakes. Not all brands are gluten free.
While fresh potatoes are gluten free, the addition of other ingredients for seasoning may affect whether mashed potatoes are gluten free. Always check with the cook to find out what they have added before assuming all mashed potatoes are safe to eat.
Are all mashed potatoes dairy free?
No, mashed potatoes frequently contain butter, cheese, milk, cream or sour cream. This recipe is made with vegan substitutes making it suitable for both a dairy free or vegan diet.
