How to store fresh strawberries
There are two methods which will extend the life of your strawberries. So if you've bought too many (like I frequently do!) these tips will help you store them for 2 weeks or more.
- Method #1 - As soon as you bring those strawberries home, wash them in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water. Let the berries soak for about 5 minutes. Once they're done soaking, lay them out on paper towels to dry completely. Then store them in the refrigerator in a paper towel lined container that is not sealed. The vinegar helps to kill bacteria which cause the berries to decay.
- Method #2 - If you have a smaller amount of strawberries to store, keeping them unwashed and closed in a glass jar (like a canning jar) in the refrigerator will keep them fresh for several weeks.

Do you have to refrigerate strawberries?
If strawberries are unwashed, they can be left out of the refrigerator for up to 2 days. However, keeping the strawberries cold will extend the life. If the berries have been washed or cut they will begin to deteriorate within a few hours unless refrigerated.
Store them according to the directions above to make them last for 2 weeks or more.
Are strawberries good for you?
Strawberries contain a variety of anti-oxidants, vitamins and fiber. On the downside, strawberries usually contain higher levels of pesticides compared to some other fruits. Buying organic or thoroughly washing your berries will help remove some of these chemicals.

Are strawberries gluten free?
Strawberries are naturally gluten free. However, some farmers do surround their berries with wheat straw. Some people who are especially sensitive or allergic to wheat may have trouble eating berries grown in this way. Ask your grower if you have concerns about wheat straw.
