Does Mexican food have gluten?
While many Mexican dishes are made with corn, there are some items, like burritos and quesadillas, are traditionally made with flour tortillas. Plus some sauces and treats, like churros, also typically contain wheat flour. Don't be discouraged though - it's easy to prepare your favorite Mexican dishes at home with gluten free ingredients.
When eating out at a Mexican restaurant, the answer is let clear cut. You should never assume something is gluten free just because it's made from corn. Corn tortilla chips, for example, are sometimes dusted with wheat flour to keep the tortillas from sticking together and they can also be fried in a shared fryer. It's best to ask questions about the preparation and ingredients if the restaurant doesn't have gluten free markings on their menu.
