Like most of you, I'm always on the hunt for new dinners ideas that won't have me standing at the stove for hours after work.  Well, this recipe for barbecue baked chicken breasts is the perfect solution!

This easy recipe takes just 5 minutes of prep time and less than 25 minutes of cooking time.  It's packed with flavor and goes great with so many sides - we love to serve it with green beans with bacon or these crispy air fryer baby potatoes. My whole family loves this recipe and I love that it is quick and simple.

    Ingredient Notes

This easy baked bbq chicken breast recipe uses simple ingredients, which you may already have stocked in your pantry. It's both gluten free and dairy free as written.

    • Chicken - I have used boneless chicken breasts for this recipe.  My store sells giant chicken breasts, so these weigh in at about ½ pound per piece.  If yours are larger or smaller you may need to adjust the cooking time.
    • Barbecue Sauce - I always use Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, which is marked gluten free.  But you can use your favorite brand and flavor of BBQ sauce.  Or even make homemade bbq sauce if you prefer.

How to Make Barbecue Chicken Breast in the Oven

Even a beginner can successfully make this juicy bbq chicken recipe for dinner.

I do recommend having a meat thermometer on hand to check that the chicken is completely done as baking time can vary based on the size of your chicken breasts.

Raw chicken, olive oil, and spices combined in a large mixing bowl.

STEP 1: Add the chicken, 1 tablespoon of oil, paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper to a mixing bowl or ziploc bag. Stir it together to coat the chicken well.

Three seasoned chicken breasts cooking in a skillet.

STEP 2: Add the remaining oil to an oven safe skillet over medium heat.  Once the oil is hot, place chicken in the pan and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side until it's golden brown.  The chicken will not be fully cooked at this point.

Partially cooked chicken with bbq sauce poured on top in a skillet.

STEP 3: Remove the pan from heat.  Pour the barbecue sauce over the chicken.  Cover the pan and bake until the chicken reaches an internal temperature
of 165F.  Cooking times will vary but mine usually takes 10-15 minutes.

    Expert Tip

I used a cast iron braising pan to prepare this recipe, but any oven safe pan with a lid will work fine. If you don't have an over safe pan, transfer the partially cooked chicken to a baking pan and cover it with aluminum foil before baking.

    Storage

Store leftover chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat the chicken to an internal temperature of 165F before serving.

Leftover chicken makes great sandwiches or even bbq chicken pizza!
