Is there anyone out there who doesn't love croutons? I mean, I could sit and eat a bowl of them like they were popcorn (LOL). Well, breathe easier gluten free friends, because these gluten free croutons are the simplest thing you will ever make from scratch.

Hang on to that stale gluten free bread, because it is just perfect for making homemade croutons. Cut it into cubes and douse it in olive oil and seasonings then bake to crispy deliciousness. These flavorful croutons are a great addition to your favorite salads or use them to add a little excitement to a bowl of soup!

Why You 'll Love This Gluten-Free Crouton Recipe

    • EASY - This recipe is one of the easiest you'll ever make.  If you can cut bread into cubes, you can make your own croutons!
    • QUICK - It only takes about 20 minutes to make homemade croutons and most of that time is hands-off.
    • ALLERGEN FRIENDLY - This recipe is both gluten free and dairy free as written and will be vegan croutons if you use vegan bread, so it's a great recipe for those with food allergies or dietary restrictions.

    Ingredient Notes

This easy recipe takes just a few ingredients which are easy to find in most grocery stores.

    • Gluten Free Bread - Stale bread is better because it will dry out nice and crisp. If you only have fresh bread, you can cut it into cubes and leave them sitting at room temperature to dry out.  I have made it with both Schar baguettes and my gluten free sandwich bread. Any type of gluten free bread should work fine.
    • Olive Oil - The oil helps the bread to soak up the flavor of the seasoning and crisp in the oven.  You could also use an alternative oil like avocado oil, although it will change the flavor slightly.
    • Garlic Powder - To make the croutons like mini pieces of garlic toast. Yum!
    • Dried Parsley - Add a little extra flavor to the croutons. You can substitute Italian seasoning for an even more flavorful crouton.
    • Salt - Definitely don't skip the salt here. It's the extra piece to make these homemade croutons delicious.

See recipe card for full ingredient list and quantities.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • Vary the kinds of bread - use something like gluten free sourdough bread or french bread in placed of sandwich bread.
    • Flavor switch-up - Add Parmesan cheese and black pepper for a flavor twist.
    • Butter croutons - Replace half of the oil with melted butter.

How to Make Gluten Free Croutons

These homemade croutons take just a couple of minutes to prepare and no special equipment is needed.

STEP 2: Combine the olive oil, garlic powder, dried parsley and salt in a second smaller bowl. Stir together.

Pour the oil and seasonings over the gluten free bread cubes.

STEP 4: Spread the croutons in a single layer on a baking sheet.  Then bake!

    Expert Tip

Depending on how stale your bread is you may need to alter the baking time. The croutons should feel crisp when they are done baking, but they will continue to get harder as they cool.

    Storage

Store leftover croutons in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.  You can also freeze them for later, although they may soften a little when thawed.
