Some pies call for an oatmeal crumble topping and other times you just don't feel like messing with a top crust. This crumble topping recipe is perfect for fruit pies, like my dutch apple pie or this delicious peach blueberry pie or use it to top off your favorite pie filling!

Since I'm using certified gluten free oats, gluten free flour and vegan butter this recipe is both gluten free and dairy free (and vegan). It does include nuts, which you can omit if you'd like. If you're not gluten free or dairy free, you can swap it for standard ingredients - the measurements will be the same.

If you're looking for a few fruit pies to try with this topping, I recommend my strawberry blueberry pie, strawberry apple pie or this yummy apple cherry pie.

      Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for oatmeal crumble topping sitting on a white table.
      • Gluten Free Flour Blend - I used Bob's Red Mill 1-to1 flour for this recipe. You can use the gluten free flour blend you prefer.
      • Gluten Free Oats - Again, I use Bob's Red Mill brand oats since they are certified gluten free. You'll want old-fashioned rolled oats for this recipe. Oats are an ingredient that is possibly contaminated with gluten during the processing and packaging, so you want to make sure whatever brand you choose is certified gluten free.
      • Salt - salt is an important ingredient to balance the flavors. Don't be tempted to skip it.
      • Cinnamon - Cinnamon pairs well with almost any fruit pie, but if you don't think it will work with your recipe feel free to omit it.
      • Brown Sugar - You can use either light brown sugar or dark brown sugar. I love the caramel flavor it adds. If you want a crispier topping, replace part or all of the brown sugar with white sugar.
      • Vegan butter - I used Country Crock plant butter here. You can use your favorite vegan stick butter. Just avoid margarine. And if you're not dairy free, you can use regular butter in the same measure.
      • Pecans - I have used roughly chopped pecans. Another nut like walnuts would be great too. Almonds would also work, and pairs well with blueberries and cherries.

See recipe card for full ingredient list and quantities.

      Substitutions & Variations

      • Not Dairy Free - use unsalted dairy butter in the same measure.
      • Not Gluten Free - Use your favorite brand of old-fashioned rolled oats and all purpose flour in the same measure.
      • No Pecans - Replace pecans with chopped walnuts or almonds. Or if you're nut free, you can leave them out without any other changes to the recipe.
      • Make it Oat Free - If you can't have oats, even gluten free oats, then I recommend using the crumble topping from my gluten free apple crumble recipe.

How to Make an Oatmeal Crumble Topping for Pie

This recipe is very simple and doesn't require any special kitchen equipment.

Gluten free oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a white mixing bowl.

STEP 1: Combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a mixing bowl. Stir it well to mix.

Cubes of butter added to the bowl with the oat mixture.

STEP 2: Add the butter pieces to the bowl with the oat mixture. Use a fork or pastry cutter to mix them together until it's rough chunks.

Chopped pecans being mixed into the crumble topping mixture.

STEP 3: Add the pecans and stir together to combine.

Once everything is combined, store in the refrigerator until you're ready to use.
